Plan to Redevelop San Antonio Center Introduced to City Council

Revitalized Shopping Center to Create Jobs and Increase Tax Revenue

Mountain View, CA - Today, Merlone Geier Partners will introduce conceptual plans to redevelop the San Antonio Center to the Mountain View City Council. The session begins at 6:00pm at City Hall, 500 Castro Street, Mountain View.

The redevelopment of the San Antonio Center aims to revitalize an aging retail center to create a shopping experience that is unique to the community, while boasting a combination of progressive architecture and beautifully landscaped public plazas that serve pedestrian-oriented stores, grocery, fine dining, boutique offices and residential housing.

"The newly redeveloped San Antonio Center will revitalize an aging shopping center with the addition of premiere stores and fine residential living," said Greg Geertsen, project development manager. "This premiere shopping center will increase local shopping opportunities and create new jobs."

Geertsen also makes the case that a redeveloped shopping center will provide an added benefit to the local economy by creating new jobs, increasing tax dollars for city services and helping to reduce local retail leakage.

"A premiere shopping center with greater selection and choices will encourage consumers to shop locally, thereby generating more tax dollars by supporting local businesses and new jobs," said Geertsen.

As determined by a retail leakage study commissioned by the City of Mountain View, the city is losing millions of dollars annually in sales tax revenue to neighboring communities. In addition to creating over $1 million in new annual sales tax revenue for the city, the project is also expected to create over 860 permanent jobs and over 700 temporary construction jobs.

The purpose of introducing the proposed conceptual plan at the city council session is to seek input from the city council and community. With public input, the conceptual plan is subject to revisions that enhance the project’s benefits.

A project website has been designed that includes a project description, architectural renderings and solicits public input from the community -- www.sanantoniocenterproject.com.
